Bei diesem Verfahren werden etwa 2 Tonnen CO\u2082 pro Tonne Stahl emittiert, was es zu einem der kohlenstoffintensivsten Industrieprozesse der Welt macht. Trotz schrittweiser Verbesserungen ist die Stahlindustrie nach wie vor der gr\u00f6\u00dfte industrielle Kohleverbraucher und tr\u00e4gt erheblich zum Klimawandel und zur Umweltzerst\u00f6rung bei.<\/p><p>Doch auch der Stahlsektor steht vor einem Wandel. Er hat sich verpflichtet, bis 2050 Netto-Null-Emissionen zu erreichen, und es gibt bereits Technologien, mit denen die Stahlproduktion dekarbonisiert werden kann. Was h\u00e4lt sie zur\u00fcck? Mit einem Wort: die Kosten.<\/p><h2>Die Technologie existiert - aber sie ist teuer<\/h2><p>Heute bieten umweltfreundlichere Alternativen wie Elektrolichtbogen\u00f6fen (EAF) und wasserstoffbasiertes direktreduziertes Eisen (H\u2082-DRI) erhebliche Emissionsreduzierungen. Elektrolichtbogen\u00f6fen, die recycelten Stahlschrott und Strom verwenden, sto\u00dfen bis zu 80% weniger CO\u2082 aus als herk\u00f6mmliche Verfahren. H\u2082-DRI, die mit erneuerbarem Wasserstoff betrieben werden, k\u00f6nnen die Emissionen um bis zu 90% senken.<\/p><p>Aber diese Technologien sind immer noch kostspielig. Die Stahlerzeugung mittels H\u2082-DRI ist derzeit 30-40% teurer als herk\u00f6mmliche Verfahren, vor allem wegen der hohen Energiekosten und der erforderlichen Infrastruktur. Dar\u00fcber hinaus schr\u00e4nkt die Verf\u00fcgbarkeit von Schrott in einigen Regionen den Einsatz von EAF ein. Trotz dieser Hindernisse deuten Studien darauf hin, dass diese gr\u00fcnen Technologien bis Anfang der 2030er Jahre wirtschaftlich rentabel werden k\u00f6nnten - wenn die richtigen Marktsignale und politischen Anreize vorhanden sind.<\/p><h2>CBAM: Ein Wendepunkt in der Dekarbonisierung<\/h2><p>Hier kommt der Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) der EU ins Spiel. Der CBAM wurde entwickelt, um die Wettbewerbsbedingungen zwischen inl\u00e4ndischen Herstellern, die dem EU-Emissionshandelssystem (ETS) unterliegen, und ausl\u00e4ndischen Unternehmen in L\u00e4ndern mit schw\u00e4cheren Klimaregelungen auszugleichen.<\/p><p>Indem CBAM die Kosten f\u00fcr kohlenstoffintensive Stahlimporte erh\u00f6ht, verschiebt sich das finanzielle Kalk\u00fcl. Pl\u00f6tzlich erscheinen emissionsarme Produktionsmethoden nicht mehr als kostspielige Belastung, sondern als strategische Investitionen. Prognosen zeigen beispielsweise, dass mit CBAM und stetig steigenden Kohlenstoffpreisen der Break-even-Punkt f\u00fcr gr\u00fcnen Stahl in Indien bereits 2029 erreicht werden k\u00f6nnte, was die Einf\u00fchrung sauberer Technologien um Jahre beschleunigen w\u00fcrde.<\/p><p>Dar\u00fcber hinaus mindert CBAM das Risiko von Carbon Leakage - der Verlagerung von emissionsintensiver Produktion in L\u00e4nder mit laxeren Klimagesetzen. Anstatt Klimaregelungen zu umgehen, erhalten die Hersteller einen Anreiz, ihre Prozesse zu modernisieren, in gr\u00fcnen Wasserstoff zu investieren und die Abh\u00e4ngigkeit von kohlebasierten Hoch\u00f6fen zu verringern.<\/p><h2>Warum der Emissionsberechnungsansatz von CBAM wichtig ist<\/h2><p>Ein sehr wichtiger - und manchmal \u00fcbersehener - Aspekt der Auswirkungen von CBAM auf die globale Dekarbonisierung liegt in der Art und Weise, wie Emissionen berechnet und berichtet werden. Bei CBAM werden die Emissionen in der Regel \u00fcber eine gesamte Produktionsanlage gemittelt und nicht an einzelne Produktwege gebunden. Diese Unterscheidung ist von gro\u00dfer Bedeutung.<\/p><p>Warum? Weil viele Stahlproduzenten gemischte Anlagen betreiben - einige \u00d6fen produzieren gr\u00fcnen, kohlenstoffarmen Stahl (z. B. \u00fcber Elektrolichtbogen\u00f6fen), w\u00e4hrend andere am gleichen Standort noch immer sehr kohlenstoffintensive Hoch\u00f6fen verwenden. Ohne eine Mittelwertbildung k\u00f6nnten die Unternehmen eine \"Ressourcenverschiebung\" vornehmen: Sie w\u00fcrden nur ihren gr\u00fcnen Stahl nach Europa schicken, w\u00e4hrend sie den Rest der Welt weiterhin mit emissionsintensivem Stahl beliefern. Eine solche Strategie w\u00fcrde den globalen Dekarbonisierungseffekt untergraben, den CBAM ausl\u00f6sen will.<\/p><p>Die Ermittlung des Durchschnittswerts der Emissionen f\u00fcr alle Produktionswege innerhalb einer Anlage verhindert diese Praxis. Dadurch wird sichergestellt, dass die Hersteller die Emissionen insgesamt reduzieren und nicht nur selektiv die f\u00fcr Europa bestimmten Produkte umweltfreundlicher gestalten.
